Middle America (my ancestral land) has a certain segment of women who find Lauer and other bland white dudes of his type attractive. One of my college roommates interned on the Today Show back in 07/08 and would come home with horror stories about Matt Lauer. The fact that NBC sat on it as long as they did is shameful but not surprising.
