I think we saw them wearing those in the limo when darlene and trenton met with them. so I think seeing them on the escalator reminded dom that the dark army could be involved. (also, everyone dies BUT dom? that's some frustratingly convenient writing.)

I definitely agree with you that no members of the group of jon and sam's friends - pyp, edd, or grenn - have been developed adequately. but they are consistently present - they've been around for many episodes and are always interacting with jon and sam. so I don't think they are totally unknown to viewers.
