I'm not defending it being the deciding factor on Top Chef, but I do think more and more people are pairing cocktails and food. I usually consider what I'm eating when I order a drink. I'm certainly not spending good money on cocktails at a fine dining establishment just to get wasted.

Did you watch LCK? Casey said something on there along the lines of "Brooke and I have been saying from the beginning that we'll be the two at the end, it's a shame we're facing off on LCK." So even if it wasn't apparent on the show, I believe that there was a close friendship between those two.
