The issue is the comparison to AP courses; not a good analogy as AP courses are spread throughout all four years of high school and are taken in lieu of standard credit courses in each grade, not on top of the courses needed to earn the regular diploma.

The U of M study is a little out of date. The province limited the number of credits that could be funded* in the regular high school system and the number of 5th year students has since dropped significantly.
