I don’t know why anybody is surprised, since this movie is only about half the book and Chani doesn’t show up at all until halfway through the book.  Except for some dream sequences.  

As someone who has read the book a few times, I’m not surprised. Her character doesn’t really enter the story until 2/3 of the way through, so if they’ve broken the book into two movies it makes sense that she won’t appear until very late in the film. She’ll play a massive role in part 2 if it happens.

Villeneuve said the next movie revolves around her, so we gotta support this one to get to the next one!
