Developers do this because they're marketing toward the dumbest people in the userbase (e.g. "The Masses"). There have been studies that show games with unique titles don't fair as well with focus groups (many mispronounce the name, non-native speakers find the titles to resemble hilarious/swear words, etc.).

As much as I despise the "celebrity" of "Dude Huge" and his douchey presentation at times, I'm a HUGE fan of Unreal Tournament and have a lot of faith in his ability to design shooter levels. Hopefully, he can revive the fallen PC shooter genre after what the consoles have done to it since 2007.
