Don’t put too much credence on the disengagement data. It’s very easy to game the system. Just drive the same familiar mile over and over again you will achieve a lot of good miles. Companies know to do real “tests” in states that do not require you to report the disengagement data.
The term used here is “premium” which includes luxury cars but does not exclude other higher priced cars. Historically for exampler Porsche was never considered a luxury car. Tesla just created a new segment of premium high tech and high performance clean cars.
If Model S and X history is a guide orders will continue to grow after initial reservation is fulfilled. It’s still an novelty for most people. Each car on the street or on neighbor’s drive way will generate more interests.
The Model 3 is a car with ASP of ~$50K with ~20% margin. How much do you think Ford makes with each Fusion sale if any?
Not sure why the author interpreted it this way but it’s not just the best selling “American premium car”. It’s the best selling premium car that happens to be from an American manufacturer. There is no Lexus, Acura or any German/Italian/British brands on that list.
