The GR86 is a Celica. The first three generations were light weight, RWD, sporty cars, and the 7th gen weighed 2550lbs, had a 8k redline, and 100hp/L and did quite well in SCCA. It was only really the fifth and sixth gen that was heavy, but even then, only in the turbo AWD guise.

No no, Rob...the car was built on a Pinto platform and it sucked. That’s why people don’t like them...it IS the car. It may have been successful back then, but that doesn’t mean it was a good car...and the styling sucked ass too.

Not just that. Even within each class, the target fuel economy is dramatically affected by the total footprint of the wheelbase. A couple inches longer and wider means significantly lower required fuel economy:
