Hydrogen isn’t without merit. It is just that getting hydrogen by reforming hydrocarbons is a non-sensical way of getting a fuel.

Hydrogen is reformed from methane (natural gas). This makes it more aligned with the current energy economy. However, as another posted mentioned, you get more over-all energy efficiency by just burning the methane in your car. The reforming process is a backwards way of getting hydrogen as a fuel.
