I thought that, although it started with "Die", it could just as likely be an attempt at "Me die" as the other way round. Made me think of it as another version of "kill me"

Alfred could never "recover" Northumbria, East Anglia or Mercia (mostly) because he (& his predecessors) had no control over them in the first place.
