I've heard the ESPN also has way fewer full-time employees than you'd think. Most of the analysts get paid per appearance, maybe even per minute on-screen (this means the company's not on the hook for Tedy Bruschi's health insurance, I figure), so they really ride the analysts who are able to get full-time gigs.
