What's gaming like on these? I'm not talking about killer framerates on Crysis 3; but could these (with mostly integrated intel HD graphics) play games like Skyrim or Tomb Raider REASONABLY well?

I'll have to try that method. I tried over FTP a couple weeks ago and I had TERRIBLE write speeds and eventually the transfer just failed.
I'll look at adding a fstab entry and try again.
You are very welcome! I wasn't really sure how to do the fan either, but I knew I had an extra USB port and I knew power came out of that (to some degree). So I just googled around until I found out how.
I've been thinking of this for a while actually. My biggest problem is getting new files onto the HDD without taking the entire thing apart.

So you actually wouldn't HAVE to solder anything; IF you didn't need a reset switch and bought some wire-to-wire connectors for the power you could get away without soldering.
TOTAL cost is around $215 depending on what HDD you go with. I had a lot of these parts lying around, and I was already dragging them back and forth with me on trips. I only had to buy the case and a few cables to get myself a nifty little computer.
