I guess this, probably more than any sort of psychological projection. His stoner mumblecore was a gateway into what could've been a really interesting career, but has instead devolved into needlessly sillier and sillier nonsense every time.
The poet's a rising star, so far as I can tell, and while their work had really strong, quotable moments, it also read as annoying and gimmicky. I find a lot of poetry these days involves pop culture references/poet references to seem clever and it bugs me because it seems lazy.

My eyes are tearing up from trying not to laugh aloud at work
I expected it to be like Reality Bites and it more or less was.
His was the only character that refused to be whimsical and was therefore the only one that was tolerable.
And now I have to go listen to Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain", followed by the rest of Rumours, because of who I am as a person.
I have fond memories of drunkenly watching this (on more than one occasion, even) with my husband when we were dating.

I'm ready to join Starfleet and gtf off this planet any time now.
I think you're safe if you just don't make racist "jokes" in the first place, y'know?
