I believe the 1988 D.O.A. is far superior to 1950's film noir of the same name. Aside from the premise (guy hunts for the person who fatally poisoned him), they're very different movies. I kind of wish more remakes would go that route: borrow the basic idea, but spin it off into an original plot. I know the

The Birdcage is so faithful to La Cage Aux Folles, at first I wondered why they even bothered remaking it (except, of course, for the fact that a lot of Americans won't watch subtitles). However, there are some small, but important differences in the third act that makes The Birdcage a better film, imo.
