Breathe, this isn't mandatory or an Apple infotainment system. There are many vehicles which will be able to run both CarPlay and Android Auto. It's simply a suite for transmitting the the data from your phone to your car more elegantly.

No, all current generation devices use the same cables. There was maybe one year when some older devices were still sold. If you want to call something betamax, then it has to be a flop. I would hardly call Apple's empire a flop.

They changed the connector in 2012 because the other one had been in use since 2003 and was very outdated. You can't complain about a once in a decade change
