This does have some heavier themes but probably isn’t what you’re looking for. Also be warned that the story takes a looooong time to pick up, so you’ll be stuck as those “kids learning to become heroes” for quite some time. I’m with you in that I wish the genre would have moved from this and other tropes years ago.

I’ve had the same experience and as someone who grew up on JRPGs it kind of breaks my heart. The community is in love with this series and I cannot for the life of me play it for very long without putting it down again and moving on to something I enjoy more.

I hate to say it, but this is probably true. By removing the character customization elements of III only to bring them back one game later in V, they removed the novelty of gameplay in IV, leaving most of the the value of the experience in the story. Even that gets dry after you’ve played it a dozen times.

Really makes me sad that the entire resolution to the game - final boss battle and all - will never see the light of day outside of a YouTube video of unfinished assets.

There is a difference between the average gamer and the average reviewer or critic. Most reviewers get into the business because they’re gamers just like you and me, but the perspective of someone who games purely for fun and one who does so for a living is inherently different.

Methinks you might be getting old and jaded, my son.

If you played Unity, you know that clutter was that game’s middle name.

Will likely debut the gameplay trailer at the Sony conference. Can’t imagine they won’t show it at some point this E3.

It won’t be hard for Sony to top them when it comes to single-player, narrative driven games which is what Sony does best but DAMN there’s no way they can beat them on innovative new features or multiplayer exclusives. This is no longer a competition. This is now two distinct platforms catering to two distinct
