I think the problem with his arc is that they’ve never really shown him “blackening.” We’ve seen a lot of young idealistic William, and we’ve seen a lot of old embittered Man in Black. Dude this season has been so disappointing. There have been some good moments (Ghost Nation episode, Maeve realizing her daughter has a new mother) but they also repeatedly undercut moments that should be significant.

So Westworld, Shogun World, Raj World are the three worlds we’ve seen, and now the choice of settings kind... make sense?
