There have been a lot of shows with a lot fewer characters and plot lines that lasted 10 (not 15? nobody wanted that) years.
It’s not that he is waiting for the end of the show to “do it right”. It’s that he believed coming into the show that there was enough material in the books already published for “ten or more seasons”....and he was right.
