The episode where he kills Christopher, and then struggles to act as if he has any remorse about it to his friends (much as he did when his mother died) basically seemed to me like Chase screaming at the audience: Hey, this is not a conflicted character! He is a truly bad guy!

This. Chase was really pissed about the audience elevating a sociopathic character to hero status.
