In the U.K. jail=prison. In the U.S. they refer to different things although you are behind bars in either case.
He was sent to jail for violating terms of his bail. He was out on bail awaiting the outcome of his appeal, but people familiar with the state’s judicial system said the appeal would almost certainly have failed, so he was going to jail eventually, anyway.
