It’s illegal. That won’t stop people. Legislating common sense is something of a waste of time.

That’s the exact point, though. Prices will rise to meet the disparity between demand and supply. Less people will buy gas, but the gas will still be available. If there’s a scarcity of gas and the price doesn’t rise, then the gas will all be gone since demand is so much higher than supply at that time.

Feared scarcity actually led to panic buying. The price immediately spiked by 40 cents/gallon on up to a lot more in many places.
