Considering the war started in September of 1939 and America only entered the war in Europe in earnest in November of 1942 with Operation Torch, that's actually pretty close to what we really did. The F35 has a 30khp ducted fan mounted immediately behind the cockpit. Remove the lift fan and now you have a giant vertical cavity in which to install you laser, generators, radiators, chillers, and a convenient drive shaft providing 20MW+ straight off the engine.
