Since the article is mostly about auto transmissions, I should add that the same holds true for autos. Since no one really wants their transmission to shift all the time (unless it’s so smooth you can’t really sense it) and most people are (for now) against CVTs, I think 10-12 gears is pretty much the max. I like my 6-speed (manual) gearbox, and with the speed limits in the US being pretty low I can’t imagine I’d really need 7 gears. You could say that more gears give you better acceleration, but as cars are becoming more and more powerful the case for more gears is becoming weaker.
