I think you’re both right. She was clearly mentally ill, desperate, and likely a victim of abuse. At the same time, she murdered her son which makes her the worst abuser of all.

I love how Seth can just hand the reigns over to his staff and let them shine. Some of the shows best bits barely involve him....which is how a late night talk show should be.

The difference being Norman Lear’s POINT was to call out racism consistently and show how wrong and misguided and dangerous for society it was whereas Roseanne just wanted a one-off “cover” episode to trot out as “proof” that she’s not like those other racist trump supporters because she likes her Muslim neighbors so…

It helped that the star of All In the Family wasn’t ACTUALLY a vile racist.

Norman Lear did it well.

It reminds me of all the post-election talk about how Trump-supporters are ‘victims’ of liberal bullying and how Trump’s win is the fault of uppity PC aggressive women/poc/gays being too rough with them, #NotAllTrumpSupporters, etc. The story is never about them taking accountability.

And the racist/sexist/homophobe is never accountable for the mistakes or shitty things they did at the beginning of the episode. All forgotten!

Yep. All this reinforces is that SOME of a minority can be okay. I once had some one say to me, “well, I mean, but you have to admit that there are black people and there are n*****s”. NOPE. No I do not. This is the “but I have a Muslim neighbor so I can’t be racist”. Fuck Roseanne.

Yeah this is one of TV’s worst tropes... the ever redeemable racist/sexist/homophobe with a heart of gold finally meets the model minority that makes him reconsider the humanity of others. Then they’re celebrated!

How many of them are going on Fox and saying that enhanced interrogation isn’t torture and they’d do it all again in a heartbeat?
