It's a great film, but a mediocre adaptation.

Yeah, definitely The Quiet Earth. 6 cast members according to imdb (and one of the weirder endings in filmdom)

The cast didn't know that the death announcement was coming - they sent Gary Burghoff in to tell them in the scene and got a very real reaction from the actors.
