We use the left arm at a 90 degree angle to indicate a right turn because it was originally meant for cars. (I think.) And since our steering wheels are on the left, you wouldn't be able to easily see a right arm stuck straight out if your blinkers stopped working for some reason.

About that last part, I agree. When I used to bring my Macbook to school, kids would crowd around and ask to use my webcam to take pictures, then ask if I could send them the pictures. Talk about annoying.
