If I remember rightly, Harris strangely, delightfully, switches to present tense only to say "Dr. Lecter has six fingers on his right hand", before resuming normal narration.

It was years before I realized he wasn't JUST complimenting her dress sense.

I love "Hannibal" (the book) both in spite of and because it is so notably different from it's wonderful predecessors.

I have read the book, and I've HEARD that one should read it before watching, but not having seen any of the show yet I can't say more than that, sorry.
