This x1000. “To serve and protect” is the biggest bunch of bullshit out there. Police departments have literally gone to court to get rulings that state they have no obligation to do either of those things. So what is their purporse? To reify state power. 

I think a lot of the (understandable) knee jerk opposition people have to calls to defund or abolish the police has to do with the misapprehension that police exist to protect individuals or that they are part of the mechanism for serving justice.
