Hartnell's era is surprisingly great. I'm actually more willing to overlook shoddy effects in these episodes than in the 70s ones (or current day), because it just seems part of the time period. The biggest complaint I have is the number of line flubs (especially from Hartnell), but even some of the more reviled

time traveling wibbly-wobbly can be used to amazing effect (The Girl in the Fireplace), or it can be used as a lazy cop-put for the writer to escape any situation. usually moffat is impeccable, but between this and S5's pandorica/big bang, I feel like he's using it as a crutch too much

well Moffat wrote this episode, along with the other 3 angel episodes. he's not terribly consistent with them, true.
