4. Cute newborn outfits, 5. Baby shoes
As a new first-time parent, I would agree with most of these; the possible exceptions would be the ‘pee pee teepee’ and the ‘diaper genie’.
Macy has a lot of great lines/speeches, and his kind of grim earnestness sells it perfectly. Stuff like:
I would like to point out that my love for this film is not related to having worked on it, because I didn’t. I’ve had friends assume I did because Mr. Furious (or some variation on it) is my online identity in so many places. My friends apparently don’t have access to IMDb.
What kills me about that aspect is that he wasn’t even doing a non-white voice in Mystery Men! He was doing an effete, posh, white British accent, and even explicitly says he’s British. Only Sith deal in absolutes, but there is no good-faith take where Azaria was trying to portray a non-white character here.
It was never supposed to be some deep thoughtful take on superheroism. The premise was “what if wannabe super heroes were really bad at their jobs”.
I would have a hard time writing bad things about the movie. I think most of Lussier’s complaints are stretching. Where he sees crap, I see comedic genius. I don’t know what he’s smoking, and I don’t want any.
You could have just said that you have poor taste in films and saved a lot of typing. 😁
When someone insults Mystery Men
The movie does nothing to mock Indian people or suggest that it would be a great idea for white Americans to dress up in Indian costumes or anything along those line.
I loved Mystery Men in 1999 & still love it now.
Tom Waits plays a pacifist inventor who lives in an abandoned amusement park for absolutely no reason whatsoever.
Mmmm yeah, I’m going to have to go ahead and disagree with you there Bob.
Azaria’s character, the Blue Raja, is an American pretending to be British but he’s dressed as if he is Indian. If this sounds problematic, that’s because it is.
I feel sad for you.
At least give William H. Macy kudos for delivering this line absolutely deadpan serious:
What a sad take. Mystery Men still stands as one of the greatest superhero movies ever made, and yes, I’m counting all the Marvel fare. I’m glad to hear it’s on Netflix now. I’ll watch it again this weekend, and I’ll like it!
I adore MM.
