How does that work? Doctors fill out death certificates, not politicians. They may be changing the way they document it for ‘official’ numbers, but the correct numbers should still be able to be extracted appropriately by epidemiologists.

Thank you for highlighting the sacrifices being made by healthcare providers on the front lines. I work in the ED and, along with many colleagues, am quarantining away from family to avoid infecting them. I have friends working in other EDs STILL without adequate protective equipment. One friend wasn’t allowed to be… Read more
I’m 100% on board with what you’re saying but also draw some caution with the concept of reusable PPE. I obviously don’t know details of the equipment you’re talking about, but most reusable PPE cannot be adequately sterilized and should be used with caution in a healthcare setting. I and many of my colleagues have… Read more
So how many kids have you adopted?
These comments are exhausting. I am an ER doctor working front lines seeing covid patients (while pregnant) wearing the same N95 mask for 5 straight days in a row. I also have friends and colleagues who had to put IVF cycles on hold because of Covid. You can recognize the frustration and heartache of that without… Read more
Autotransfusion actually is a thing. It’s used sometimes in trauma or surgeries with massive bleeding. The rest of what he’s saying is insane though, and I agree that his medical license 100% should be revoked.
As someone currently looking into IVF options, the fact that the couple spent $100,000 is horrifying, not because of the cost but because of the number of egg retrievals that must’ve paid for and how hard they worked for those two little embryos that the clinic freaking lost. That must’ve been 5-10 egg retrievals… Read more
Seconded as someone who has two dogs that sometimes bark but whom we immediately bring inside when they do. Because we aren’t asshole neighbors and don’t neglect our dogs.
I don’t have numbers but a significant percentage do not significantly improve. The ones that do require significant physical therapy to get there. This is very polio-esque.
This is different than what the article is describing. This new virus actually causes paralysis that often does not get better. Those that do improve have a long road to recovery. What you are describing is scary for the parent but on a totally different level than AFM.
I live in an area with a high-kill rate at the shelter (people don’t spay/neuter here and there isn’t the culture of adoption like in some other places), so my experience may be totally different, but we got our dog at the city pound, paid $50 to get him neutered, and walked out with a dog next day (the pound doesn’t… Read more
My two dogs both came from the city pound, both adopted full-grown, and are both better behaved than many of my friends’ well-bred, expensive dogs. I don’t judge people who get dogs other ways, but I couldn’t have asked for better pups than these two (and they seem to like us pretty well too). My ‘trick’ is to ask the… Read more
We did the same thing when I worked retail 10ish years ago - supposedly it makes the store look low-end to paying customers when you accost somebody for stealing, so we were told to basically just make the person uncomfortable but let it happen.

I’m 29 weeks with my first. Feeling down because my husband is visiting family and I’m back home working, but the little nugget keeps doing summersaults to remind me he’s here too, so I guess that’s something.
She’s beautiful! How many weeks was she when she was born (if you don’t mind me asking)? She has the cutest rosy cheeks - just precious. Congratulations on all of her great progress, I’m sure this has been a long, exhausting road.
I’m feeling melancholy this Christmas too - something about the holidays can really mess with you. My husband is visiting family, and I flew ‘home’ (to the sort of crappy city we moved to for work and where we have no family and no close friends) because I have to work through the holiday. I 100% agreed to this plan… Read more
My theory is that you are right - the higher mortality is related to difficulty with communication and that black women’s concerns and real medical issues are not being acknowledged or addressed as quickly because of communication issues with (predominantly white, often male) physicians. It would be interesting to see… Read more
I have literally sent in tips (and received responses from authors/editors) that have become articles on this site and been commenting for years and am still languishing. It is a broken system.
