I was always under the impression every suit had its own arc reactor. Tony's reactor is used as an addition to the suit power. That's why his suit can use a ton of repulsor tech with his suit.

This makes a lot of sense. I believe it can be attributed to our ancestors as well. It's not like they had desk jobs. I assume our ancestors were the farmers/hunters who ate but were continuously moving almost immediately after their meals.
