Had to go watch Balance of Terror after seeing this and not knowing it mirrored the TOS ep. It was impressively good for the time. 2 thoughts outside of the parallels, is I think that was George Lazenby, my favorite Bond, as Stiles and how much Shatner of that time and Chris Pine from the movie resemble each other.

Exactly.. this was done to not only use the time jump as a place to pause, but because it will take some time to find the outlet and funds to wrap up the remaining stories. It also serves them to drive demand from viewers/fans to support funding further production.
That’s not true. The producers do intend to continue the story. The way they do that remains to be determined. First of all, I hope they don’t dismantle the sets.
