A written traffic infraction contains the name of the vehicle code breaker.  Who would get the ticket in a driverless car?  The CEO?  The software guy?  The janitor?  Who would get the point on their record, or have to attend traffic school, or see their auto insurance go up?

As stated, it’s an approximation for calculations.  It would have been maddening to enter it to all those digits every time a ‘C’ problem appeared on homework or a test.  The approximation doesn’t matter so much once you round everything off to the required significant digits.
