Well 1 fairly large intake is in the basement and 3 are upstairs (2 hall, 1 living room). Those intakes can't be closes. I do leave the fan on through out the day though when it's hot, along with the attic fan. I feel the AC kicks on less when the fan is left on.

What about a raised ranch with a basement? Close the basement vents to keep the upstairs cooler since the basement is already cool. Wise?
