@balls187: It's not the best indication, but my 15" unibody MacBook Pro's system rating went up an entire point after installing the updated drivers (graphics related improvement).

@purplegreendave: Pretty much every "upgrade" version of Windows has allowed clean installs. They usually just request either the Media or the Key from the previous version of Windows to verify you're "upgrading".
