one of my favorite novels on this topic, is The Recognitions, by William Gaddis (1955). still worth reading.

as always, The Hero must face daunting opposition, otherwise his/her eventual triumph is less meaningful. thus, of course, it's always Rosen's fault.

First I'd want to know is whether they had a sense of humor or not. Ask them what was the answer to "the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything," kind of thing. If they did not show a sense of humor, I'd run away very quickly.

incarceration rates in the US are vastly higher per capita than anywhere else on the planet. that's why the crime rate is falling.
