I’, 5'3" and petite and have some advice. Carry and SWING a large purse, briefcase or computer bag on your “passing side.” A large umbrella under your arm, point forward works well too, as do pointy elbows.

At least here in Britain, both parties move... often in the same direction... then you have that awkwardness of negotiating via hand gestures and small questioning vocalisations who goes where, and both people walk off feeling a bit silly for causing such confusion.
