VTOL uses so much fuel that it's rarely used for takeoff. If it was used for takeoff it would have to mid-air refuel right away. Even the harrier's rarely would take off from a carrier without a catapult launch.

A friend of mine works for them and to be fair they catch knives and firearms from being brought onto planes all the time. It's just so commonplace it doesn't get heard about on the news.
