Agree with this (and all the other comments agreeing with it). “Plainly” modifies “prevent” not “catching,” and you can “prevent” something if you reduce it’s chances of happening from, say, 20% to 0%. So, the question isn’t whether it’s clear that the OF would have caught the ball, but whether it’s clear that the fan …

The reasonable interpretation is that it’s less about whether he would have caught it and more about if he could have caught it. It’s impossible to know if he would have caught it - amazing plays and dumb errors are both made pretty often - be he definitely could have caught it.

Yup, its “plainly prevent the fielder” not “prevent the fielder from plainly catching the ball”. Chris Mullen clearly reached into the field of play and plainly prevented the fielder from going for the catch
