Doom3 was Doom made by guys who obviously loved System Shock, and it's kind of an awkward marriage. But I liked it too, it's just a very different sort of atmosphere and pacing from the originals.

Four seconds is an eternity in this kind of combat. Serious Sam BFE used this kind of thing, but they were 1-2 seconds. And even that got old after awhile, the best melees were when you just kicked somebody away.
