I don't see how people can misinterpret this scene so badly. He did make a choice to kill Zod, but he clearly did it to save that family. Before he did what he ultimately had to do, he was pleading with Zod, "Stop! Please don't do this!" and literally had tears in his eyes. After it was done, he cried out in agony
