I thought the movie was really good (speaking as a huge fan of the book). It definitely has flaws, but Leo really beautifully embodied Gatsby. You have to really love him (Gatsby) and root for him for the movie to work, and Leo just got the desperation and the emptiness and the hope so right.
Why the negativity? I loved the book. I loved the movie. The movie was truly stunning, and even Fitzgerald's granddaughter was complimentary. I plan on seeing it again.
This movie was awesome. Baz's films tend to get panned by the critics and then adored by the viewers. People want to be critical for the sake of it, without having seen it but what business do they have making the assumption that it sucks?
Chris Rock has expressed some serious regrets about that bit, considering how it's been used to justify that kind of attitude.
Wouldn't it be "Tori Spelling hates attention like Kim Kardashian loves privacy"?
Yeah, some of the more 'enlightened' racists I knew growing up (I don't spend a lot of time around racists these days) solved this problem by neatly separating people with black skin into: 'regular black people' and n*. As in: "I don't hate black people, I hate n*, it's different."Except they would never apply the…
"It's bizarre how strongly people will hang on to their concept of what those people are like, even when they're talking to someone who is actually one of those people..."
My mother is STILL like that. And often in stories she will mention a person's race if and only if the person is a person of color, regardless of whether race has anything to do with the story. She gets mad when I point it out to her and tries to make excuses for why it's not racist.

Ha! I love the 'she's black, but really pretty." And that's how I met my husband!
A bit off topic, but my favorite causal racist comment from my youth was when I'd hear adults describe a person this way: "Oh, he's a black guy, but a real hard worker..." That used to blow my mind, even as a kid.
I'm a twice-over immigrant. The number of times I've had people bitch about immigrants to me then pause and say "..but of course, I don't mean you!" is too damn high.
Agreed. This is totally active racism. Making a racist club involves an actual, active choice. It's a lot more effort than, you know, not making a racist club.
Now that my daughter has been outed as a casual racist....
For me, the "penultimate" Donna Martin episode is the one where she tried to make us believe she was a huge Flaming Lips fans in 1993. Ah, such a great episode. Not just for The Lips, but for Steve Sander's "You know, I've never been a big fan of alternative music, but these guys rocked the house!" line. The…
Why are you commenting on my comments if you don't like them, huh?
Thanks for saying it- Jezebel is full of pretty white girly-girl-girls-girl writers who just want their problematic dolls to play with and no one else can say different.
So when is 2 Broke Girls going to be cancelled it has to be one of the most racist shows i have ever seen. Also all i am getting from this article is Jezebel will watch any show no matter how racist it is as long as it has a white female lead.
