I'm pretty sure this was just a weird coincidence. Toei made up the Maron girlfriend while Toriyama was still working on the chapters that introduced Marron as Krillen's daughter. There was even a joke about it in yesterday's Super episode.
I liked that arc a lot except for the ending. Dragon Ball has almost always had pretty low stakes because the dragon balls are a built-in reset button, but Super does have a mellower vibe overall. It's kind of an extended Dragon Ball after party.
