Without Gyllenhaal in NIGHTCRAWLER or Washington in ROMAN, neither of those films would have deserved much acclaim. The performances drive the films.
I liked Nightcrawler, but there is something a bit hollow about its transposition of the world-on-the-edge-of-violent-breakdown that was a big part of the 70s zeitgeist to an era with different problems. The bit where it’s mentioned that Lou Bloom’s footage is valuable because violent crime is so far down is a good…
I like her and I think she’s very talented, but they’re all definitely starting to blur together for me. I don’t even like Melissa, but throw a bald cap on her and let her try for once.
Amazing how many men are in here trying to minimize the hatred women got
OK, NOW it maybe automatically gender driven, but that’s only because of what came before. I get that you want to feel free to criticism them on their merits alone - depending on what those merits are - but so many of the early “critics” set the tone with their tone-deaf comments that centered on gender.
I mean, the fact that people treat Ghostbusters like it’s Star Wars or Jack Ryan, rather than a comedy with special effects, is indicative of some kind of disconnect for me.
You can’t criticize the last Ghostbusters film or The Last Jedi without being labeled a misogynist.
I remember it more fondly but I also saw it when I was a kid and had no taste
I was threatened rape on twitter more than once for saying I’d give the all-female film a chance, so whatever you didn’t see, a lot of females felt. Whatever you don’t doubt, please take that condescending tone and shove it. You can’t know if you haven’t experienced it.
A lot has been written about how Superman’s character was completely mishandled in this movie. Not NEARLY enough has been said about how Pa Kent was completely mishandled.
Superman got his greatness from Krypton. He got his goodness from his homespun human parents from the middle of nowhere. I have no idea how “let…
I always had a sneaking suspicion that Uncle Ben had a MAGA hat.
It would be like Uncle Ben telling Peter “With great powers...fuck everyone else!”
“The movie opens with a wild, psychedelic Kryptonian battle sequence, which is a whole hell of a lot more engaging than a bored Marlon Brando intoning at crystals for 20 minutes.”
Hot-take: Superman kind of needs some version of the 1960s Batman treatment.
I agree that the characters change so frequently in the comics that big screen variations should get less ire.
Rami Malek for his part seems to have played a big role in getting Singer booted (if nothing else, he could have fought for Singer if he felt like it).
Maybe I’m being naïve, but this shit is on the studio to better vet their asshole directors (especially asshole directors with crap professional reputations) more than it’s on the other people the studio brought in to work with said asshole directors.
I could argue Ant-Man & the Wasp was even better.
Sorry to Bother You should be on there somewhere.
