Yes it works until you have to downsize your engine. The public perception is bigger number equals better. So trying to sell a 320i as a replacement for the 328i wasn’t going to work. The same for Benz and Ferrari and pretty much every other company that has cars named after the engine size.

Tying a car’s name to its engine is a terrible idea that will almost always come back to bite companies in the ass. The car should keep its name based on the race car. There is no reason to change its meaning now, because it makes plebs’ brains hurt.
