I’m not sure that analogy holds up. The painter’s involvement in your project starts and ends with painting. He know’s what he’s charging you, and thus can work out his margins.

Not true and neither is the house painting scenario an apt analogy. Hourly workers get a breakdown showing how many hours they worked on each day of their schedule, not just a paycheck. Breaking down the hours shows the employee whether they’re being short-shifted, whether they’re being docked for breaks they should

The good old “pick yourself up by your bootstraps” argument. Free will is not a guarantee that you will attain the things you choose to pursue. As an occasional ride-share driver and full-time employee (at a job that calls me an employee), I too have free will to find a better paying job that will eliminate the need

In answer to your “why would he?” question: because they are claiming the drivers are contractors who can take or leave a fare based on whether it’s good for them or not. Hiding this information takes something that was already difficult and makes it impossible.

“...we wanted to highlight aggregate earnings content and basic insights like total hours & booked hours which can encourage drivers to rely less on individual ride details, which can be misleading, and more on the larger weekly earnings picture.”

I’m not sure my comment came across in the tone I was hoping for. I totally agree with you. The police had an truck loads (literally) of resources at their disposal. Resources meant to prevent unnecessary escalation — if only the officers were able to do the same. In mentioning that she had a knife, I didn’t intend to

I wonder how often situations like this, where intermediate options on the continuum for force are available and appropriate (and in this case even planned) but somebody makes an individual decision to use lethal force, result from lack of incident command.

What the cop said made sense. What the cop actually did, did not. I mean, don’t get me wrong, if a woman starts running up on me with a knife, I’m going to shoot her if I can’t run away from her. But I’m not a cop. With backup. With knowledge of her well being. With other less lethal options. With a plan that I’ve
