I can see the self defense aspect of the actual shooting, but it sounds like ALL of the campers made very, very bad choices that day, but only one of them paid for it with his life.

I don’t think you understand how hate crimes work. If there was no crime due to self defense, there was no bias motivated i.e. “hate” crime.
