Yeah, it really was more of a cherry-picking deal for him, I think. After all, he did bring Quinlan Vos into proper canon with Episode III because he liked the character. And he must've picked up the names Palpatine and Coruscant from the novels.

Funny thing is, most post-Jedi EU material probably would have been discarded anyway had Lucas decided to do VII, VIII, XI regardless of the buyout. He did threaten recently that he had story treatments ready for them.
