I was thinking along the same lines i.e. a vague sci-fi source to the mysteries. But the more episodes I see, the more I suspect that it will end up much more prosaic...
The old Rancorr seems to have had 3 points, which were (mostly) pretty reasonable at the time in all fairness;
I get very annoyed that what is actually just (increasing complex) automation is so often conflated to being 'artificial intelligence'.

Unpredictable, reckless and childish even; with a TARDIS! Now, that's a character. He's not evil, just deeply flawed and aware of that - the show is finally acknowledging it…
