I was thinking along the same lines i.e. a vague sci-fi source to the mysteries. But the more episodes I see, the more I suspect that it will end up much more prosaic...

The old Rancorr seems to have had 3 points, which were (mostly) pretty reasonable at the time in all fairness;

I get very annoyed that what is actually just (increasing complex) automation is so often conflated to being 'artificial intelligence'.

I'm not going to deny the problems with this episode (and the rest, far beyond Capaldi), but...to me this Doctors churlishness is a good thing. Unpredictable, reckless and childish even; with a TARDIS! Now, that's a character. He's not evil, just deeply flawed and aware of that - the show is finally acknowledging it…
